Physics students in the NASA Space Apps Challenge

At the beginning of October, the first stage of the international space hackathon NASA Space Apps Challenge took place.
FMF students also joined the hackathon:

  • The Einstein’s Sect team worked on an application that simulates all known Near-Earth Objects (NEOs);
  • The Veritasium’s Witnesses team worked on a project of space seismic surveys in the solar system.

“I participated in NASA’s annual hackathon while I was in Canada as part of the Veritasium`s Witnesses team with Dmytro Twardowski, who is also in Canada. We were working on a project of space seismic surveying in the solar system and developing a program that removes noise without significantly distorting the seismogram to optimize data transmission from the spacecraft to Earth. At the local Ukrainian stage, Ukrainian juries evaluated our project and we became one of the 5 winning teams this year. Now our project will be evaluated at the global stage,” said Kateryna Rachek, a 4th year undergraduate physics student at the FMF.

From now on, the winning team, along with their innovative ideas, has the opportunity to present themselves to NASA judges at the global stage. If they win, the team will have a chance to visit the space agency’s center in the United States.

We wish you success and inspiration!
